Pulsate – Melting Time, Dissolving Time (2004) Sachiko Kodama

A new version of <Pulsate> using two metronomes.
This work was exhibited in the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.“Pulsate” was a popular piece at the 2004 "Navigator -- Digital Art in the Making" exhibition at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. This exhibition differs from the 2002 piece with the same name by the addition of color and two metronomes. It is my interpretation for a romantic installation.
In the center of a bright, white room, there is a white table with a light pink tablecloth and two chairs. Placed on the wall are two light pink metronomes. The sound created by the metronomes represents the biological ticking pulses of two people. The metronomes go in and out of sync, at the speed of two heartbeats. Breaking the silence of the room, the ticking of the metronomes makes the black liquid in the plate placed on the table come alive with ripples. As time passes slowly, as if in a dream, the ripples melt away in waves. The interactivity at play in this exhibition is the dynamics between sound and fluid rather than between the installation and the audience. However, we want the audience to play a part in the installation. We hope to bring out this concept through the continuation of this piece.
